What constitutes the perfect road trip in Western Australia?
Depending on how much time you have and your particular interests, the answer is subjective. To inspire those who are thinking about a road trip with your caravan or camper trailer, here are two WA road trips, one short, one long.
We’ll start in Perth for both routes, and because Western Australia is so large and diverse, we’ll make each route different so you can get a taste of everything WA has to offer.
Good Planning and Preparation
No matter how long you plan to be away on your WA road trip, good planning and preparation is always time well spent.
Read some of our other posts on tips to plan the perfect get away so you can relax and enjoy yourself knowing you’ve got everything you need, and done everything right.
The Short Route
For our short road trip, we’re going down south to Mandurah and beyond. The beaches are the best you’ll find anywhere in the world, and there are state forests and national parks to explore.
We’ll follow the coast road to Busselton and the stunning Margaret River region and then head inland to see the interior. Perhaps we’ll head down to Albany at the bottom of the state then make our way back up to Perth through Kojonup and Beaufort River, or maybe take a detour and visit Broomehill Village further east.
The Long Route
Western Australia has 12,000 km of stunning coastline. For the long road trip, we’ll be heading along the coast, so don’t forget your camera!
Since we have plenty of time on this trip, we’ll be heading north from Perth along the coast for a while, travelling up through all the beautiful seaside towns towards Geraldton just over 400 km away.
We’ll take our time to stop and look at the scenery while we drive all day to Geraldton, booking into one their many caravan parks overnight.
The next day, we could take a leisurely drive up to Carnarvon and stay overnight. Remember, this is a road trip, so we’re in no hurry to get there. After all, we want to see everything!
From Carnarvon, we’ll head up to Coral Bay and Ningaloo in one of the most beautiful places in the world. It’s so spectacular here that we’ll have to stay a couple of days just soak it all in.
When we’ve had some rest and relaxation, we’ll again head north on the highway, stopping wherever we want to on our way to Broome.
We’ll stay in Broome for a while to marvel at all the beaches, seaside towns, and cultural attractions, and then we’ll plan our trip back down south.
Depending on how adventurous we are, we can either head back down the coast or go inland into The Kimberley region to see some of Western Australia’s spectacular outback scenery.
